Dolophrosyne coniades (Druce)
Taxonomy:The type locality for Dolophrosyne coniades is "Sarayacu, Ecuador", but that locality is believed to have been reported in error [see Miller (2009); Bulletin of the Amerian Museum of Natural History, No. 321]. The sister species of D. coniades is D. sinuosa Miller, known from cloud forest habitat in Cuzco, Peru.
Geographic Range:Dolophrosyne coniades is known from a small area in northeastern Ecuador, from the nearby towns of Baeza and Cosanga (Napo Province) at elevations between 1800 and 2000 meters. Although this moth is quite rare in museum collections, it is commonly seen in its habitat, flying during the day along gravel roads and forest trails, especially in locations where its larval food plant, Chusquea, is abundant.
Foodplant Associations:At Yanayacu Biological Station, caterpillars of Dolophrosyne coniades have been recorded feeding on the cloud forest bamboo species Chusquea nr scandens.
Dolophrosyne coniades (Druce)
Foodplant Associations:The larval hostplant for Dolophrosyne coniades is Chusquea nr. scandens.
This information is based an ongoing project dedicated to the inventory and dissemination of information on lepidopteran larvae, their host plants, and their parasitoids in a Costa Rican tropical wet forest and an Ecuadorian montane cloud forest.
