Diagnostic description: 

Understory shrub; can reach heights of 2m.

Has prop roots.

Look alikes: 

Piper pseudobumbratum has a similar growth from and stature to Piper auritum. For more infomation see attached pdf (Greig and Mauseth, 1991).

Herbivores: 

This information is based an ongoing project dedicated to the inventory and dissemination of information on lepidopteran larvae, their host plants, and their parasitoids in a Costa Rican tropical wet forest.

N=6 herbivore associations as of 2012.

Geometridae: Eois sp. 14; N=3.

Hesperiidae: Quadrus cerialis (Stoll); N=2.

Noctuidae: Unknown sp.; N=1.

Larval lepidopteran herbivores reared in Heredia Province, Costa Rica (La Selva Biological Station).
